The hotel will hold a block of 25 rooms until January 27, 2015.  After that date, the unreserved rooms will be released.  The cost is $135 for a single or double room.  An additional $10 will be added for each person per room, up to 4 people total.  The rate does not include applicable taxes or fees.  The hotel offers one voucher for food and drinks.  This voucher is for one person only.  It provides breakfast, dinner and two drink coupons per day in the Old Town Tequila Restaurant & Cantina.  If any additional persons in a room would like to purchase a voucher, they may do so for $24.00 per voucher per day. The Best Western/Hacienda offers an airport shuttle.  Overnight parking is $14.00 per car per night.

Comfort Inn is not reserving a block of rooms for the SEM conference, but will offer this special rate on a first-come, first-served basis until January 27, 2015.  The rate for SEM is $84 per room per night for one to four guests.  The rate does not include applicable taxes and fees, but does include full breakfast and free parking.  Comfort Inn does not offer an airport shuttle.  A cab ride from San Diego Airport to the hotel costs approximately $25.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Submission Deadline: December 15, 2014

The Program Committee of the 49th annual meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California and Hawai'i Chapter (SEMSCHC) invites and encourages local SEM members, students, faculty, and all others interested in the fields of ethnomusicology and systematic musicology to submit proposals for the forthcoming two-day meeting. Proposals are invited for individual papers, organized panels, and roundtable discussions. Alternative formats will also be considered.

As in the past, we prefer not to stipulate any conference themes in advance, but instead allow themes to emerge from the abstracts received.

Proposals from graduate students in ethnomusicology, systematic musicology, and closely related fields are especially welcome. Graduate student papers are eligible for the Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize. The Program Committee also strongly encourages local faculty and new or visiting scholars to contribute to the program.

The Program Committee is pleased to announce the possibility of submitting proposals for virtual papers. Given the geographical expanse of our chapter and as a way to foster the participation of members from Hawai'i who are unable to travel to attend the meeting, panel sessions may include papers read via Skype or similar video conferencing technology. Proposals for virtual papers will be evaluated according to the same criteria as all other abstracts, but must indicate the need for video conferencing under "audio-visual requirements."

Presentation Formats

Individual Papers: A 20-minute paper followed by 10 minutes of questions/discussion. Submit an abstract of 230-250 words through the online Proposal Submission Form.

Organized Panels: A 90-minute panel with three 20-minute papers or a 2-hour panel of four papers or three papers plus a discussant. Each presentation (a paper or a discussant's formal response) will be 20 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes of questions/discussion. The Program Committee reserves the right to suggest the addition of a panelist when an independently submitted abstract appears to fit a panel. The panel chair/organizer must submit the Organized Panel abstracts and information through the online Proposal Submission Form. Include the panel abstract of 150 words (describing the rationale for the panel as a whole) and abstracts for the individual papers of 230-250 words.

Roundtable Discussions: Roundtable discussion sessions provide opportunities for participants to discuss a subject with each other and with members of the audience. Sessions lasting 60 or 90 minutes should include three to five presenters. We encourage formats that stimulate discussion and audience participation. The organizer will solicit position papers of up to 10 minutes from each presenter and will facilitate questions and discussion for the remaining time. The roundtable chair/organizer must submit the Roundtable abstract and information through the online Proposal Submission Form. The abstract must outline the purpose/agenda and organization of the session, as well as the anticipated contributions of each participant (unnamed in the abstract).

Other Formats: The Program Committee will consider proposals for presentations in formats other than those listed above, such as film/video screenings, group workshops, or lecture-demonstrations. The presenter or organizer must submit the abstract and information through the online Proposal Submission Form. The abstract must outline the proposed content and format – including length, space, and audiovisual requirements – of the presentation, as well as the anticipated contributions of each participant (unnamed in the abstract).

About Abstracts: Abstracts must be between 230 and 250 words (except for the Panel Abstract, which should be 150 words), and should appear as a single paragraph. Abstracts should demonstrate a clear focus or statement of the problem, a coherent argument, knowledge of previous research, and a statement of the implications for ethnomusicology.

Proposal Submission
Deadline for all proposals: December 15, 2014

Submission: Proposal submission for all presentation formats must be completed through the online Proposal Submission Form.

Notification of acceptance: on or before January 16, 2015 (by email).

Note: All accepted presenters are expected to pre-register on the conference website. Other conference attendees are encouraged to pre-register online as well.
