Conference Abstracts
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Submission Deadline: January 4th, 2020.
The Program Committee of the 61st annual meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California and Hawai’i Chapter (SEMSCHC) invites and encourages local SEM members, students, faculty, and all others interested in the field of ethnomusicology to submit proposals for the forthcoming meeting to be held February 8th and 9th at the University of California, Riverside.
Proposals are invited for individual papers, organized panels, and roundtable discussions. We also welcome proposals for a lecture-performance or other creative contribution; these may be submitted using the same categories for papers, panels or discussions, according to the time and number of participants involved. As in the past, we prefer not to stipulate any conference themes in advance, but instead allow themes to emerge from the abstracts received.
Proposals from graduate students in ethnomusicology and closely related fields are especially welcome. Graduate student papers are eligible for the Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize (see the guidelines posted on the SEMSCHC website at http://www.semschc.org/hoodprize.html).
The Program Committee also strongly encourages local faculty and new or visiting scholars to contribute to this program.
Presence is required at the conference to give a presentation, except for members in Hawai'i and in other exceptional circumstances. Proposals for virtual papers will be evaluated according to the same criteria as all other abstracts but must indicate the need for video conferencing under “Audio-visual requirements.” Slides and media files for virtual papers must be provided to SEMSCHC in advance of the meeting so that they may be accessed at the conference site for reliable display.
• Individual Papers: A 20-minute paper followed by 10 minutes of questions/discussion. Submit an abstract of 200-250 words on the Proposal Submission Form. http://www.semschc.org/submit.html
• Organized Panels: A 90-minute panel with three 20-minute papers or a 2-hour panel of four papers or three papers plus a discussant. Each presentation (a paper or a discussant's formal response) will be 20 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes of questions/discussion. The Program Committee reserves the right to suggest the addition of a panelist when an independently submitted abstract appears to fit a panel. The panel chair/organizer must submit the Organized Panel abstracts & information on the Proposal Submission Form. Include the panel abstract of 150 words (describing the rationale for the panel as a whole) and abstracts for the individual papers of 200-250 words each.
• Roundtable Discussions: Roundtable discussion sessions provide opportunities for participants to discuss a subject with each other and with members of the audience. Sessions lasting 60 or 90 minutes should include three to five presenters. We encourage formats that stimulate discussion and audience participation. The organizer will solicit position papers of up to 10 minutes from each presenter and will facilitate questions and discussion for the remaining time. The roundtable chair/organizer must submit the Roundtable abstract and information on the Proposal Submission Form. The abstract must outline the purpose/agenda and organization of the session, as well as the anticipated contributions of each participant (unnamed in the abstract).
About Abstracts: Abstracts must be between 200 and 250 words (except for the Panel Abstract, which should be 150 words) and should appear as a single paragraph. Abstracts should demonstrate a clear focus or statement of the paper, a coherent argument, knowledge of previous research, and a statement of the implications for ethnomusicology.
Notification of acceptance: On or before January 21, 2020 (by email).
All accepted presenters are expected to pre-register on the conference website. Other conference attendees are encouraged to pre-register online as well.
