SEMSCHC Annual Conference

Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California and Hawaii Chapter
57th Annual Meeting

March 4-6, 2016
University of California, Los Angeles

PROGRAM

ABSTRACTS

2016 MINUTES

Dear Members and Friends of SEMSCHC,

The Program Committee for the 2016 meeting is pleased to post the program that you see here. Our work began with the understanding that this would be the fiftieth anniversary meeting of the chapter. This provided impetus for building a three-day schedule (a first as far as we know) and inviting the participation of two keynote speakers, both of whom we are delighted to say have accepted.

Now that it turns out to be the 57th annual meeting of the chapter, we have no regrets that the scale and scope of the meeting are indeed worthy of a fiftieth anniversary meeting. The consolation here—if indeed there need be any such: only 18 years until the chapter’s Diamond Jubilee!

We invite you to join with colleagues and friends in early March at UCLA for what promises to be an exciting weekend of research, colloquy, and performance.

Thanks and best regards,

SEMSCHC Program Committee

All-day parking ($12) and short-term parking (payable at pay stations) are available in Parking Structure 2, which is the closest parking lot to Schoenberg Music Building on the East side of the UCLA campus. For the main Lot 2 kiosk, which will only be open on Friday (it is closed on Saturday and Sunday), enter the campus at Hilgard and Westholme Avenues. For the pay stations in Lot 2, continue west on Westholme Ave. past the kiosk and turn left on Charles E. Young Drive East. Turn left into the SECOND entrance on your left in Lot 2, where you will see a sign about Pay-By-Space parking. For more information on Pay-By-Space parking at UCLA, visit: https://main.transportation.ucla.edu/campus-parking/visitors/self-service-parking-pay-stations.

For the concert on Friday, March 4 at St. Alban's Church, the church does not offer parking, so you will need to park in Lot 2 and walk across the street. For the concert on Saturday, March 5, in Schoenberg Hall, parking attendants will be stationed at the main entrance to Lot 2 on Westholme Ave. from 6:30-8:30pm.

If you would like to purchase parking on Saturday or Sunday at a regular kiosk, the only one that is open both days is Kiosk 9, at 555 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90095. They can sell you parking in Lot 2. The Kiosk accepts cash only, but the pay stations accept cash or credit cards. For more information, visit: https://main.transportation.ucla.edu/campus-parking/visitors/information-parking-booths.
