2013 Post-conference Message from the President

On behalf of the Executive Board of the Society for Ethnomusicology Southern California and Hawai’i Chapter (SEMSCHC), I thank all who planned, presented and attended the one-day 47th Annual Meeting of SEMSCHC on Saturday February 23, 2013, hosted by UC Riverside.

I think this was one of the most inspirational meetings we have had in a long while. The papers accepted and panels organized by the 2013 Program Committee, chaired by Ruth Hellier-Tinoco (UCSB), represented some of the most recent research by young ethnomusicologists in our region. These papers were regularly intellectually provocative and incited vibrant discourse. 52 members registered and attended. To be commended for hosting the meeting with style and grace is the Local Arrangements Committee, chaired by Jonathan Ritter (UCR). Sponsored by Rene Lysloff and the UCR Asian Studies Program, the conference began with hot coffee and a delicious continental breakfast. During the morning break there was invigorating music by Mayupatapi: the UCR Andean Music Ensemble and a soothing performance of Keroncong music by Paul Michael Atienza and Joshua Brown during the afternoon break. The meeting included two virtual paper sessions Skyped from Hawaii. The SEMSCHC Business Meeting actually ended on time. In her Keynote Lecture, Dr. Sherry Ortner (UCLA) eloquently informed us that an ethnographic kinship exists between ethnomusicology and the anthropological study of independent film. The conference ended with what was, in my opinion, pure fun. We had pizza, fresh fruit, water, camaraderie and spur-of-the-moment musicking among talented friends and colleagues. With their sincere volunteer service and professionalism, throughout the day, UCR ethnomusicology graduate students made us feel significant and welcome. Congratulations planners, hosts, presenters and conferees.
